While returning from a trip in March 2007, I came through Elizabeth, IL and found their
former Chicago Great Western railroad depot and caboose, which has been preserved by
the Elizabeth Historical Society. Constructed in 1888, the depot and caboose now
house the Chicago Great Western Railway Depot Museum.
More information about the depot may be found on the Elizabeth Historical Society web site:
These shots look towards the front of the depot. It looks in great shape for
a 120-year-old building!
More views of the sides and back.
Looking down at the depot and the nearby caboose from an enbankment next to the old right-of-way.
Like the depot, the caboose is very well-preserved. It is situated on the right-of-way
just down from the depot.
Elizabeth, IL has many nice old brick buildings along its main street (Highway 20),
many of which have turrets. Here are two views of the business district.
This building was built in 1889, one year after the depot was constructed.
More old buildings in the business district.
A couple smaller brick buildings.
